Facebook threats and harrassment

Hi, I've been receiving death threats and other forms of harassment from an individual on facebook. I know this person well, it's my brother. He is livid over an inheritance I received.

Again, the person doing this is known to me and again, sending me death threats and physical harm threats. i want to report him to the police and get a restraining order.

My problem is, brother is in California and I'm in a small town in Idaho. My local police dept., well, sucks. I'd prefer not to deal with them. Could I just go ahead and contact California authorities?

You can choose to do two things: 1) Block and ignore the person threatening or harassing you, 2) report the matter to Facebook authorities and/or your local police/law enforcement agency.

You have the ability to do many things, I suppose among those many things, you are able to contact California authorities.

You might wish to ask yourself should you do anything other than block the person and ignore him?

As you revealed, the alleged miscreant is in CA, you are in ID, hundreds of miles apart.

You got the money, he did not.

Do you think a piece of paper will cause the ignoramus to suddenly stop harassing you?

Wouldn't it be simpler to block the dummy?

As my father was find of saying, "Don't look, you won't see, don't listen, you won't hear."

Why not just enjoy your great life and ignore those who envy you?
 
Army Judge, would the threat "dice you and slice you up and do the same to your kids" only warrant "blocking" this sicko on facebook?

Again, we have a horrid little police dept. here, they run speed traps for a living. Would I be better off directly contacting California authorities...or will they tell me to go through my local cops?
 
Let me ask you a question, and there is no right or wrong answer to it. You know your brother and I don't.
Do you actually believe that he is going to get in his car, drive up to Idaho and attempt to kill you? (and if so, why do you believe that he would announce his intentions in advance?)
Or do you believe that he is venting his anger and is only blowing smoke?

Yes, because if the "sicko" came to my home, I wouldn't be the one slaughtered.

I'm sure any police agency has its critics and fans.

However, when even police critics need help, they don't call thugs, street gangs, hoodlums, or homeless swarms; they call the police.

You remain free to contact the FBI, Secret Service, Facebook authorities (who know what to do, and will do it), your state police, or any law enforcement agency you choose.

I do KNOW that there is NOTHING a bunch of anonymous strangers on a legal discussion site can do anything but offer you suggestions.

Ummm....we have no reason to believe you lack the ability to "contact" anyone you like, but it's not clear which "California authorities" you want to contact.

Note that, even if your local cops were the best in the country, there is nothing they could do given that your brother lives in another state. You might try contacting the cops where he lives, but keep in mind that he's likely to tell them something like, "yeah, I got a little carried away, but I'd never actually follow through on anything, and anyway, I live hundreds of miles away," at which point, that will end the matter.

my brother. where do I start? He was facebook harrassing his ex wife, threatened to kill her new live in boyfriends dog. It was ignored and ex wife blocked him, like you all suggest. He proceeded to drive across 3 states and did just what he promised - killed the dog in front of his ex wife and kids

Still think blocking him of facebook is the thing to do?
 
Have you actually called your local PD and reported these threats or you just assuming that they will do nothing?

Do you own a gun and know how to use it?

Let's say both Califonia and your local PD take it seriously what do you think is going to actually happen? It isn't like they are going to provide 24/7 armed security for you? And if your brother is a crazy as you say a protective order isn't going to do squat.

But Califonia does have Red Flag laws now. So maybe they will go take his weapons. If they do let us know how it works out.

Frankly, what I (or anyone) think(s) is of no moment, import, or concern to you.

It is NOT what you think, but what you CHOOSE to do.

Those of us who abide by and obey our laws, while living in a free society where each of us is free to do whatever the law allows us to do, can do whatever we desire.

You don't need strangers to advise you to do, refrain from doing, whatever our laws allow us to do.

However, a maniac that travels hundreds of miles to kill an animal, isn't likely going to obey a pretty piece of legal paper ordering him to behave himself, when he disobeys the laws civilized people choose to obey.

You have choices.

You have remedies.

Only YOU can protect YOU and yours.

The law enforcement agencies all across our nation remain ready to serve you, if and when you contact then.
 
Contacted the local police. Chief is a 2nd cousin to my ex, says that legally and morally he can't get involved. Called the County sheriff in California who says "you're local police must first file this case, then get ahold of us"

Meanwhile, guess who just drove past my house 3 times in the last 10 minutes. My ex. Apparently, he decided to make the long drive up here to make his presence known. I've got a sawed off 12 gauge double barrel loaded with buckshot and an imaginery line drawn at my door sill. c'mon, cross it and there'll be no trial, no reports to file.

Did my best to get law enforcement involved. Oops, he just drove by again

It's a thing to do.

If you can't get law enforcement local to you or your brother interested (and it's worth pointing out that local police may be more likely to do something than the county sheriff, unless your brother lives in an unincorporated part of whatever county in California), then your options are a restraining order and self-defense.
