I married a Nigerian immigrant. We went through the whole green card procedure. The last thing we needed was verification of his divorce from his wife in nigeria. the embassy would not verify or approve it because they found out he was still married to his wife in Nigeria. He found a lawyer here to file a divorce and the court here in my home state of North Carolina granted him and her a divorce. Making our marriage null and void. He could get his green card if we remarried. I refused because he lied to mew to get the green card.

I want to change my name back to my maiden name, but the court said i cannot with out prove. His divorce records are in the courthouse but they say I need anannulment or divorce papers.
Can I file for an annulment myself or do I need a lawyer?

If neither of you is contesting the divorce, then you can file the papers yourself, but from what I can see on your posting, it doesn't look like this is the case... so the best advice is for you to consult with an attorney. Good luck to you!
