What constitutes proof or evidence of negligence on the part of a defendant in a suit brought on by tree/limb damage to a neighbor's house? Does there need to be written documentation by the plantiff?

Whatever proves that the defendant didn't conform to the required standard of care, and that doing so caused damage to the plaintiff's house.

Evidence need not be written. It could be viva voce testimomy, expert evidence, videotape... It all depends on your local rules of court.
