We've been instructed not to speak to our boss

A very strange incident happened at work today. Our boss, and his boss were sent home on leave for the week. Auditors were brought in who searched all of our computers, and we told that we are not allowed to speak to, or even contact, our bosses. My boss is also a personal friend, and we were told that we cannot even contact him outside of work. Is it legal for a president of a company to enforce such a request?
