About a month ago my fall semester ended and a friend and I decided to smoke marijuana in his car. It was his car so he was driving and decided to park in an area that we found out later to be private property. The biggest mistake of my life was agreeing to this and I don't think I will ever forgive myself. We were both charged with unlawful possesion of marijuana and pled guilty. The result was a $100 fine.

I attend a University and will be graduating with an Environmental Engineering degree within 2 years (May 2017). I am extremely worried that all my hard work in school will go to waste because of this being on my criminal record for employers to see during a background check and not being able to get a job. Do violations appear on background checks or effect my financial aid? Is there a way to have my record cleaned of this only offense that I have?

Any answers, information or additional questions you may have would greatly be appreciated. Thank you

NY allows one to pursue two options; an expungement or seal your record.

The difference is spelled out on the links I've attached.
After reading the information on the links, it would be wise to meet with three or four lawyers in your area.
The initial consultation is normally provided at no charge.
By meeting a lawyer face to face you are free to ask questions, get clarifications, and seek a detailed explanation as to how the process flows, and how much it would cost.
WARNING: Neither option will ever cleanse the stain.
Only a full pardon from your governor will do that.
Yeah, well a pardon ain't going to happen, unless you have millions stashed away and are well connected in NY politics.

It was, indeed a very grave error in judgment.
It will eliminate you from consideration in regard to many employers, especially government sector work.

Anyway, investigate, educate, and learn how to remediate the error.

Before you fork over any money, always do a thorough DUE DILIGENCE, and if you have doubts, just say, NO THANKS!

Here you go, a little reading is in order:
