Hello, I'm making this query on the behalf of a friend who is somewhat stranded in Ireland.
She came over 3 years ago (with her then boyfriend) and married (civil marriage, not church) to be able to work here. She is a U.S citizen, the person she married was an Irish citizen.
She now wishes to return home to New York city. The divorce procedure in Ireland takes 5 years and a whole lot of money to process. Given that she wants to return home in the next 6 months, this isn't really feasible.
There are no claims on property/children etc. the only requirement is for the couple to be divorced in the eyes of the united states.
Does she need to be divorced/seperated in Ireland or can the divorce be processed from the United States side?
Would remarrying in the current circumstances make here guilty of polygamy in the united states?
Many Thanks in advance.
