My son will be 18 and his father has told both of us long ago that he does not want anything to do with either of us, and advised us not to call or contact him...he does continue to pay child support. My son wants to change his last name to my last name. Can he do This? He does not want to carry the name of a entire family that does not have anything to do with him, never has never will, they do not even acknowledge him as family.... My son claims because his father and i were never married and his fathers name is not on the birth certificate he wont have a issue. I dont know, i do know that with child support he is listed as non-custodial parent....can anyone help me make this transition with my son...he wants it done b4 he graduates in may so his dipolma can reflect the true family name. NYS Law Reads Like Greek!

Name change is a fairly simple procedure that is done in district court. It is inexpensive as well. Contact the local district court,or contact the court clerk.
