It will depend on state law as well as federal. If the battery was punishable by more than a year in custody, then he is prohibited under federal law. If he was convicted of a misdemeanor battery in some other states, he could be prohibited from possessing a firearm for a specified period of time. And, if the battery was for domestic violence, he is likely prohibited under both state and federal law.
