Will having a class 3 misdemeanor and assault & battery on my records stop me from purchasing a firearm?

It should prevent you from purchasing a firearm, yes ... depending on the age of the assault and battery conviction.

    What state are you in?

It will depend on state law as well as federal. If the battery was punishable by more than a year in custody, then he is prohibited under federal law. If he was convicted of a misdemeanor battery in some other states, he could be prohibited from possessing a firearm for a specified period of time. And, if the battery was for domestic violence, he is likely prohibited under both state and federal law.

It would help to know what state the OP is in.

Go to a gun shop and ask them. They should be experts.

It makes sense. They want to sell you a gun, yet they won't want to risk running afoul of the law.
