Profit Sharing Volunteers?

Is it acceptable for volunteers to be included in a profit-sharing program? I help a non-profit organization that runs an organic farm. They use the farm as a teaching tool, and sell the produce. They share some the profits from the farm among the employees and volunteers,with the rest going back into the non-profit. Does that in any way jeopardize their volunteer status? If so, what would their status be? Thanks for your help.
