Pay based on marital status or kids

I work with a non-profit org that sponsors missionaries in foreign countries. Is it legal for us to pay missionaries different amounts based on marital status and the number of children they have (on the premise that more children means more expenses & we want everyone to have a more or less similar lifestyle)?

I would say so. Generally speaking, religious organizations are exempt from most of the anti-discrimination laws.
