I apologize if this appears disorganized, but I am under significant stress right now.

My ex is moving across the country due to a job transfer.

He has physical custody, not court ordered, agreed upon, as I make very little money and was hoping that the children would benefit from staying in the same financial situation that they had grown up in, rather than the sparse conditions that I live in now.

With the upcoming move, I will no longer be able to visit the children, as it will become cost prohibitive. I cannot afford more than one, or two visits per year via air and do not get more than a minimum vacation time. Drive time would be also prohibitive. I currently have the "standard" visitation schedule.

A friend mentioned that as my ex is the one moving that he may be responsible for paying for the children to come visit. Is this true?

Yep. Your state still has jurisdiction, also you can fight this move. Do not assume he is allowed to move. I highly suggest you at least get a consultation with an attorney. Why is he moving? You need to take dad back to court and get him to pay for all transportation costs to visit, plus the visitation schedule needs to be changed to accomodate long distance.

Also you can file for custody of the kids. With no court order, this eventually needs to go to court to get finalized, especially if he moves.

What state are you in? Move away statutes vary from state to state, so this is an important question to answer.
