I'm now 32, and my last name was changed during adoption proceedings after my mother divorced, then re-married about 22 years ago. My mother no longer carries the name of the man she married (probably since I was 12?), and my stepfather is no longer alive. Anyway, to make a long story as short as I can, I agreed to take on the last name in my youth as it was my mothers will. I never wanted the last name, and have only carried it for so long now because any effort to find out how to change it back has proved futile. That, and I was told that the court records were sealed by the judge. I'm about to marry, and I seriously want to reclaim my heritage so I can pass it on to my own 2 children.
I scoured over the yrs for an answer, but that led to nothing. And I've only been afforded the plethora of information offered on the internet for maybe the last 4 yrs. I would highly appreciate any help in this matter. I'm desperate. This is a 12 yr relationship involving 2 little ones, and I don't want my earlier family turmoil to create an event where my own children couldn't possibly create a family tree down the road?
The jurisdiction was Binghamton, N.Y.
