Is it illegal to use a promo code for instance on a shoe retailer that you have purchased from someone. I purchased a promo code from some random guy online that gave me 50% off almost the whole store. Is it illegal to use that promo code on the website? I dont know if the code has been hacked or whatever.

You'll have to use it, or try to use, to determine the code's authenticity.

    The code itself is legal.

How you acquired the code might be considered shady, but might not be illegal.

If you try to use the code might be the moment the authenticity and legality come into play.

You're an adult, which means you're responsible for the choices you make.

The fact that you're seeking guidance on the code's legality tells me you're no dummy.

Every time I've had qualms about something, I didn't do it, because I didn't want to end up wearing the risk.

    It might be a trap.

    It might be okay.

At least the seller who sold you the code didn't scam you.

Well, the vendor is honoring the promo code for the moment so I don't think there is any issue with it. The vendor is probably still making a profit or he wouldn't have issued such a generous promo in the first place.

Buy something else and see what happens.

I forgot the most basic comment.
If the site is a trusted site you have used in the past, like www.retailmenot.com or similar, its probably okay to buy as many as you can use.

By the way, what is the site?

The shoe site is probably counting on the people buying shoes not being Imelda Marcos or other shoe fetishists.

    Makes sense to me.

I wonder if the shoe store is making a little something off of the coupons the site sells?

There is no law that makes it illegal to buy or sell a "promo code." However, a promo code that gives 50% off probably comes with some fairly hefty terms and conditions, and selling the code might violate to those terms and conditions. Without knowing those terms and conditions and the circumstances of how the person who sold you the code acquired the code, it's difficult to tell you much. That said, promo codes are generally readily available for free at any number of internet sites.
