hello,i work for a local cable sub-contractor.i am an employee NOT a 1099er.i get deductions from my paycheck for different reasons.
1)if i dont complete the job as my employer wants....i get charged back the entire job(even if i just forget to put a little purple tag on a cable) i can lose up to 120.00 on some jobs for this.basically end up working several hours for free?
2)i drive a company truck(which i was tricked into getting.by doing this my bill codes are lower than if i was driving my own vehicle.so the amount i pay depends on what types of jobs i do(ive payed up to 400.00 a month...the more money i make, the more i pay on the truck.we pay for our own gas,and if we damage it we can be deducted for the damage(they carry insurance so why do we pay?)
3)if we quit or get fired we are required to turn in all tools(we payed for them at the start) without getting reimbursed the money payed for them
4)at the start we bought "security" keys(catv keys)that added up to 48.00 but if we lose just 1,we have to buy a whole set for 500.00
5)when we complain about something or dont go above and beyond to help out,we end up with a less than par schedule for the following days.

ive been to the us dept of labor, and the only item they seem interrested in is how our overtime or lack of is calculated.aside from putting dwn money for an attorney(which i cant do yet) is there anything that can be done?there are several employees and former employees wanting to start a case but is it worth it?

Gather your colleagues and take your case to an employment attorney when you can. There, after all the evidence is provided to him/her, s/he will determine if you have a solid case to present to the courts. Good Luck!
