I want my tools

Im an auto mechanic that was recently fired. I went back to get my tools, and with the help from the G.M., there was an accident. My tool box fell while loading it in the truck and damaged a car in the shop. The G.M. asked me to come back the next day to finish getting my tools. Now they wont let me back on the car lot to get my tools. They say they will call thge police if I come Back unless I take care of damages to the damaged car. What Can I do?

Check out the laws in your state. I don't believe they can hold hostage your personal property, especially if you need it for your livelyhood. You can sue them in small claims court for the cost of the tools, but they may countersue for the damages to the car. The garage should have insurance to cover damages on their property and if they have a deductable you may be liable to pay that. Have they given you the amount they want you to pay in writing? Contact the police yourself and see if they will escort you onto the property to get your tools.
