Hired and let go within the same month

I was hired on Dec 16, 2009 for a full time grounds/maintenance position. A week and a half prior to the hire date I work through a temp agency for the same position. The position was posted on the company website and I applied and was hired. I was told 2 weeks ago that my position would no longer be needed as the company was going to hire an outside firm to do the the grounds maintenance. The Business manager also stated that I was an unskilled laborer. Which is not true because I was hired or my skills. Have any laws been broken in this hiring practice. If they new they were going to hire a company why did they not just leave me as a temporary position.

It sounds as if one hand didn't know what the other was doing but no, no laws were violated. Bad management, that's all.
