Exercising their basic right to fire???

I live in New Jersey and have worked for a company for six years. Without any warning I was fired. When asked why they told me they weren't at liberty to discuss it they exercising their right. History; My boss and I are dating which they became aware of last year through my bosses wife. (he wasn't living home) He found out about it through his wife only because the wife and the owners secretary were exchanging phone calls and the secretary gave the wife phone records of my boss. Since then I have never spoken to the secretary who runs our entire office since then she totally ignores me. Fast forward now that they fired me I come to find that they are questioning all my billing said there are inconsistantcies and have taken my computer out of the office. They have never ever asked me any questions about how I handle my billing and when my boss has told me they asked him I begged to have them ask me and I would gladly sit down and anwser any questions but they never did.

Do I have concerns and should I be contacting a lawyer even though I don't know why I would need one.
 
You are right - why do you think you need a lawyer?
 
Why wasn't I given a reason for being fired?? Why would my computer be taken out of the office?? Why haven't they said anything to my boss since he does run the entire office?? Why hasn't any one spoken to me before this is it because I had an affair with my boss?? Can a lawyer answer any of these questions?
 
Do you know for sure that you were fired because of your affair with your boss? That is your assumption but you don't know that and probably never will. Employers can fire employees at will and they don't have to give you a reason why they did that. What they do with the equipment you used to have access to your work tools after you left should not be your concern unless you had something or did something against the law that will incriminate you. You don't have a case here.
 
The "at will" doctrine which your state is part of allows employers to terminate without warning or cause. The exceptions would be in this firing broke laws, cba or employment contract. None seems to be case here. It may be unfair but it is not illegal. No Lawyer is going to touch your case without a hefty retainer
