We hired (through a verbal contract) an excavator to clear our land for the building site. We discussed the possibility of clearing land for a view but when we called to give the go ahead on clearing we specifically said to clear ONLY the building site. When we went to the land we see that it was scalped! Now we can't get hold of the company owner, he doesn't answer our messages. What are our legal obligations when he finally sends us a bill?

You're in the wrong forum - your situation doesn't have anything to do with employment laws. You need to repost under business law/contracts. More than that though, you need to see an attorney in person. You may well have a claim to bring against the contractor for the value of the property he damaged.
