I am being sued in small claims court over custody of a dog. Should plaintiff prevail, I would like to recover costs associated with the care of the dog for last eight months. Can I just state this in my answer or would this be a counterclaim?

If you want money as a defendant, you must state a counter-claim, and provide PROOF to substantiate your demands.
