My wife was married for eighteen years to a man who retired from the US Navy after twenty years. As part of the divorce settlement, the court ruled that she was entitled to 50% of her former husband's retirement benefits. Each January since her divorce in 1999, she has received a statement from the Dept. of Defense reflecting her total benefits for the preceding year. She did not receive this statement this year.

She contacted the Dept. of Defense, and was told that this alimony is not taxable, and that they have stopped sending these statements out unless it actually is taxable. Please note that the document that she received each year in the past was not an IRS Form 1099R, which the DoD website states is the documentation that should be used for tax purposes.

Any help will be appreciated.
