Defamation?

I was caught at a retail store (Best Buy, also a former employer) stealing, I know what i did was wrong and it was a mistake. Now that its over one or more of the employees are telling other people that i was stealing and i was wondering if they are alowed to tell others or if it would be considered defamation of character. It is really hurting my place of work and over all reputation. Please help me.

It is defamation if someone tells something negative about you that was not true. Since you did steal, it is the truth and therefore no defamation.

dont they have to keep things like that to them selves? is their any kind of law against such matters. It is wrong for them to call me a theaf when in actuallity it was simply a mistake?

No there is no law against that. These are some of the consequences of crime.

The best thing is to hope for people to lose interest.
