Can the father seek some sort of joint custody so he doesn't have to pay child support?

I'm not an attorney - but the father can file for joint custody for any reason. Naturally, he wouldn't use that excuse in court (if he's smart), but he could very well get joint custody and that can be the result.

Joint Custody is not going to prevent/stop a CS order.

Joint custody does not mean 50/50 parenting time and even with 50/50 time only if both parents incomes are the same then it is possible no child support.
