My ex of 2004 has filed a complaint for a modification to our divorce. She is in Ms and I have moved to Ca to keep my job. I wish to file a counter claim. Can I do this in Ca now that I am a resident?

No, you have to answer in the state from which the suit emanated.

In this case, I suspect it is Mississippi.

You do know that as a resident of California, you don't have to submit to a suit in Mississippi, right?

A Mississippi court has no personal jurisdiction (in personam jurisdiction) over a resident of another state, unless you submit to that jurisdiction.

You might want to consult with a California attorney before you submit to a Mississippi court's jurisdiction over your person.

Generally, submitting to the jurisdiction of any court voluntarily isn't advisable!
