Can an employee refuse to sell alcohol if uncomfortable with the employer?

Actually, I'm going to any ways. I'm just curious what the outcome might be. Here's what's happened. I work for an employer who may be supplying to underage people, including another employee. I have a minor coworker who runs around talking about having gut rot and how he got drunk one night with his friends. His friends will shop at the store and have bought alcohol before. My other coworkers including some supervisors love to talk about how they are all friends (not with me, thank god) and have friends and family at the police department. This kid runs around telling everyone he loves them so it's really unclear to me who is providing and God only knows if this kid is providing cigarettes to someone else since he definitely drinks and is underage. I reported it to the FBI their website since I might be looking at the local police like yeah, right. Not that I expect any sort of response and no, I did not inform my employer. I just started to refuse to sell and even though this is not the main item we sell the are making a big deal out of my refusal. I thought that was interesting because the majority of employees are of a legal age to sell. Not to mention it's the employer's choice to not allow anyone under the age of 21 to sell even though the legal age is 18. So why can't I refuse? I don't know. It's fishy, weird and I'd rather be fired. Is that legal? I don't know I guess that's what I'm wondering. I also have some medical conditions that make me uncomfortable IDing a person any ways. I have schizoaffective disorder and cerebral palsy and I feel like these things make me an easy target for legal issues. I don't qualify for disability. I've tried. I have serious concerns about custody issues with my son and this weird stuff at my work. I have a teen boy whom I don't have physical custody of but very liberal parenting time. I don't want to lose my time over getting in trouble with this employer. When I told my boss I wasn't comfortable selling he told me that's what he needed me to do. I told him I wasn't comfortable and he would have to do what he needed to do and I would do what I would need to do but I wouldn't sell and then I went to the sales floor and back to work. He said to me as I left the office, thanks very much" and I said you're welcome. I think he thought I was heading to the time clock to quit. Not a chance. If he wants to terminate me that's fine. But I want documentation even if it means requesting a police escort to remove me from the premises. I've worked one day since then and they came in with a series of "test", I'm certain. With alcohol to my register before sales time and moved me to the front counter so that I would have to call a manager for a sale. They changed their policies regrading cough medicine sales. Good thing because the register only asks for ID under 40 which is a variable not consistent with state law. Would I receive unemployment benefits for refusing to sell? I quit from another employer because I was being harassed and the state refused to issue it to me because I didn't stay and work it out. Then I was raped a few years later by one of their employees. I guess I'm staying at this one now to see what happens.

My questions:
Can I legitimately be fired for refusing to sell alcohol when I believe my employer is selling inappropriately?
Can I be fired for refusing to sell alcohol if I have an illness that may interfere with my ability to sell?
Will I receive unemployment benefits if I am fired for refusing to sell alcohol for my employer?

I'm sorry, I'm confused.

Exactly how does your disability interfere with your job requirements?

Yes, it's called INSUBORDINATION.

If you were fired for INSUBORDINATION, you'd have to prove that you did so because you refused so as NOT to break the law.

However, an employer does not normally need to offer an explanation to terminate an employee.

Maybe you need a new job, not in retail.

You might receive what you seek, a termination, and not receive unemployment assistance; and make the next job harder to obtain.

Yes, your employer could terminate you. Whether you receive UI benefits would be up to the state. You "might" receive them if you were being asked to do something that was not legal. We can't say/don't know.

Rather than refuse to sell, why not demand ID of the customer?
If they don't have ID or produce a suspect document THEN refuse to sell.
You may also report underage sales to your state Alcoholic Beverage Control agency. They do their own investigations seperate from local police.

She said she has a medical condition that prevents her from asking people for their IDs. That's a new one on me, but I'm no physician, just a poor, old, country lawyer.

I believe the OP would most likely do better at a different type of job.
