Bigamy - Is an annulment necessary?

My boyfriend married a woman in 1996. Approximately 5 months later, she filed for a divorce from her first husband. My boyfriend did not find out about this until years later when he went to the courthouse to get copies of his divorce papers for the military. Turns out, she actually never filed for the divorce. Possibly because the marriage was never valid in the first place. My question is, does he still need to get an annulment? Since the marriage was not valid in the first place.... people at the courthouse have no answers for him... Thank you.

If she was not divorced from her first husband, then likely your boyfriends marriage to her was never valid in the first place.
