Hi, I am in a unique situation, I am trying to quit my part time job but I was told in so many words that I cannot quit. To be more specific I work in the entertainment business down here there is only 2 people that can do our position, my boss and myself. I only work there once a week and when he goes on vacation. I want to quit to focus on school and my full time job however I was told by my boss that I "have to cover for him whenever I take off."

So basically I am being held hostage at work how do I break free?

There is no such a thing as being held hostage. No one, and I mean, no one can make you do anything against your will. If I were you, I would give him notice (if you want to be nice) or quit all toghether. I hope this helps!

We abolished slavery in this country quite some time ago. If you want to quit, simply stop showing up for work. He can't force you to keep working for him. The only thing he could do about it is tell prospective employers who call him for a reference that you quit with no notice (which you did).
