As an adult, am I entitled to compensation from my dead-beat dad?

I am 33 years old. My father and mother separated when I was 4 and my sister was 6. A couple of years later he left Canada (where I live now) to return to the US. He has never had any contact with us since and we've never known where he was. He obviously never helped us financially after he left, even though we were in dire need of it.

I've managed to locate him and was wondering what the likelyhood of receiving compensation from him would be if I were to pursue it.

my daughter is 21 yrs old she has never seen her dad and he has never paid child support now she is in college and she is wanting to know is there a time frame for her to collect child support she really could use the money
