I have a unique situation. I am looking into Adopting a 10 month old baby girl, the mother was from NY and had moved with her father to Africa. She had a baby and now wants to give it up. She will not be requesting an adoption fee. The parish that is helping her out will pay for the baby to fly with a nanny to the us so I can have her. I want to know if this is something I should do? As far as legitimacy goes were are working with a lawyer and everything seems to be all set.

Make sure that the parental rights have been terminated in the country of origin so you will not be faced with the possibility that the parents may change their mind many years after the fact and claim the child back. Cover all of your basis with experienced foreign adoption attorneys here and in the country in Africa where the child is coming from. Good Luck!

Every country in Africa has its own laws about adoption. You probaby need an attorney from there. The Dad must consent and give up parental rights. You also might be required to fly out there and submit to a home study.
