Does anyone know what the laws are for signing away ones parental rights in Maine? This would be voluntariley. Does someone have to want to adopt the child (child would already be with mother and father wants to sign off) like a stepfather or can a father just sign off and have the mother have sole custody?

Can't do it. Not that easy. If it were we would have deadbeat dads walking all over the place thinking they can sign away their rights by a piece of paper .

In order for a termination of parental rights, there needs to be a step-parent willing to adopt. It is not a do it yourself project, see an attorney.

A termination of rights and an adoption is only done when seen to be in the childs best interest. If there is no step parent adoption, then it is generally not seen in the childs best interest as both a mother and a father need to be financially responsible for the child.
