Is there a limit on the total deposit a landlord can ask for?

Can the landlord ask for an additional $700 pet deposit? Are they any limits that apply to total deposit allowed?

California statute 1950.5 (c) A landlord may not demand or receive security, however denominated, in an amount or value in excess of an amount equal to two months' rent, in the case of unfurnished residential property, and an amount equal to three months' rent, in the case of furnished residential property, in addition to any rent for the first month paid on or before initial occupancy.

CA Codes (civ:1940-1954.1)

The total deposit of $2050 is the equivalent of two months rent, so that's OK, assuming you rented unfurnished.

If the $700 pet deposit is in addition to the $2050, it's illegal. If it's part of the $2050 it's legal.

If the landlord included any furniture a deposit totaling $3075 would be legal.

Regardless of the legality, if the price is too high, walk away from the deal. There are other apartments waiting to be rented.
