Will and Probate Question

Does a will always need to be filed with the court in California after a person dies? If the will was written through an attorney, is it a normal practice for the attorney to file it at the time it was done?

If there is a will it is supposed to be filed with the probate court after death. Not sure of the normal practice in CA but here the attorney just keeps it in his file.
