What happens to unused attorney funds if I had to paid for my ex-husband's legal costs upfront? My ex-husband got awarded $36,000 in legal fees to bring me to trial because my "net-worth" was more than his. After I paid the $36,000 to his lawyer, we ended up settling quickly; less than four months later. I was told by my lawyer that unused attorney fees go to their client (my ex-husband) but this doesn't seem right because that was my money. Shouldn't the unused funds go through the settlement? My ex-husband's lawyer will not give me an accounting of the funds nor will my ex tell me how much extra (my money) he got back. What are my rights?
