what can I sue a contractor for?

I paid a contractor 800.00 to start a siding job. The job was 3500 total. This was on 12.31.14. He has since given me the run around ds so I had to hire someone else to do the job as I was being cited by the city of New Orleans for code violations. The contractor has not paid me back yet or put forth any effort to work the 800. Off. Can I sue for anything in addition to the 800. And court fees?

The contractor took $800, did no work.
The $800 are your damages. You could make a claim for any fines the city assessed you. The court will decide.
the $800 is a no brainer, but don't think that means you'll get the money. If you prevail and receive a judgment, then you have to try and discover the person's asset and see if you can get some or all of the amount of yoru judgment. Trust me, the small claims court process is much easier than trying to get blood from a rock!
