Wanting custody of daughter

What is needed for man to gain custody of his child if he feels the mother is not doing a sufficient job at parenting? Whats steps should I take in preparation, evidence/ proof, to prove her behavior is not suitable? What do the courts look at determine an unfit parent?

An unfit parent is generally one who seriously neglects the child's basic needs, is physically abusive, or exposes the child to imminent danger.
