My friend has been legally married almost 3 years but has been separated for over 1 year. In august his wife got deported to guatemala and she left her son with him and a signed letter giving him full custody of his son (he is a us citizen) and there is been no communication since and doens't know how to reach her. Is there any methods of divorce in his case, if she isnt present? How does he proceed? Is the letter she left useful to get full custody? How quickly can this process be?

He should speak with an attorney. Generally his wife will still need to be served, even if it's by publication and this is not something he should try himself.

There's a great chance (it's virtually guaranteed, actually) that he'll get full custody of his son.
