I receive a letter every 6 months threatening to garnish my paycheck from the US Department of Education. My parents told me to enroll in college. It took 7 years to graduate. I get a bill from the US dept. of education that says I owe about $40,000 for a student loan. They say they will garnish my paycheck if I don't fill out a Financial Hardship Form with proof of income and expenses. I have a family to take care of now. Will I have to do this every six months for the rest of my life? I am sad that I get this bill and have no way to resolve this. If my paycheck is garnished I will not be able to support my family.

Well...yes, in a nutshell.

You owe the debt and it's going to follow you around for a very long time.
