Recently I went to work as general contractor for a house renovation. We agreed that my fee would be a percentage of the projects cost. Now after three months of work my client has decided that he no longer needs my services and wants to pay me a portion of the amount we agreed upon. Because we had a mutual friend we never had a signed contract. Is there anything I can do? I have expenses in travel time, phone calls, lodging and meals, to say nothing of an hours spent and what he wants to pay me amounts to less than minimum wage. Any help would be much appreciated.

Probably there is some recourse. Either you can prove the contract, which of course might be difficult, or at least you can recover quantum meruit, which basically means that you are entitled to the fair value of your services if the other party should have known that you want to be paid for it and let you perform the services.

You should consult an attorney.
