Hello all.

I am a seventeen-year-old male paying not only rent but car insurance fees to my mom weekly. I have a job that only pays me roughly $160 every two weeks, and she's charging me $75 a week. Here lies my problem. I want to live under someone else's roof because I think these rules are absurd!! I agreed to paying the car insurance ($215 a month, no biggie) however the extra money is not necessary. There are plently willing to take me in however since I'm a minor, I'm not sure about the legal aspect of doing such. Someone please enlighten me on this subject!!

By the way, I'm attending Rowan University this upcoming year to study to become a lawyer!

First off congrats on attending Rowan - up until 2005 I lived within walking distance of the university.

Secondly, I don't have any advice on a professional level.

But on a personal level, it sounds like you have a pretty good deal going.

You are on your mother's car insurance - at a risk to her if you screw up. How do your paid car insurance fees to your mother stack up to the actual cost of insurance?

$75/week in that area of NJ is a good deal - is she buying the groceries, cooking, cleaning, etc?

So roughly every month you are earning $320-480. You are paying out $215/month in car insurance and roughly $300-375 per month in rent. That means you are paying out $515-590 per month, but only earning at most $480. I'm having an issue with the math, either you exagerrated what she is charging you or you underestimate what you earn per month.

So who is paying for college?

Sounds like your mom might be better off if you did move out. I hope you are prepared to pay the car insurance fees that come with being a young driver in NJ - they're outrageous. You're going to need a new job - even if your friends let you live rent free AND if they feed you for free too.

I am guessing, and I could be guessing wrong, that mommy dearest is paying for college, or at least a portion of it. And if you are studying to be a lawyer she has quite a few years of frugal living ahead of her - I think you might want to stop and get her flowers on your way home from work tomorrow.
