Can GAP insurance or my car insurance reimburse me for my down payment on a totaled vehicle?

I purchased a used vehicle 10 months ago and gave $3,000 down payment
2 weeks ago the vehicle was involved in a hit and run while parked on a public street; my insurance company totaled it for 9k I owe 11k I know GAP will cover the difference, but I'm curious to know if GAP or my insurance can refund me my down payment or at least some of it.

Have you spoken with the police?
I suggest you keep in touch with the police.
The person who hit your car, may have insurance that can assist in making you whole.
If not, once the police find the culprit (assuming he or she is ever found), you could go after the miscreant for whatever out of pocket losses you are suffering.
