My tax returns for 2006 was prepared by a well know firm in illinois, clifton gunderson, the IRS just sent me a notice that there was an error on the return for $2000. I called Clifton and asked them to check on the mistake and they said, yes it was an error on their part due to some computer glitch. But that I would have to pay the IRS for the error. Are they not responsible for making the error resulting in me having to pay the amount and penalty.

Was a service guarantee offered when you hired this company? If not, demand to talk to a partner on the firm. State that you had entrusted their company for tax services and having the IRS coming after you for a balance that didn't get paid is not what you expected to see. Be persistant and talk to higher ups. Middle managers and staff will not know how to handle this situation. In the meantime, pay the bill so you don 't get in trouble with IRS. Good luck to you!
