Small claims appeal, Calif.

In Calif. the Plaintiff (supposedly) does not have the right to appeal. How does a Defendant's counter-claim affect that? Can the Plaintiff appeal and have his own claim reviewed also? I recently won both the Plaintiff's claim and my own Defendant claim, but the Plaintiff claims he can appeal.
