Sign on repayment, no contract by major employer

I worked for a major company for 3 months. I received a sign on bonus. I was not given a contract, I did not sign anything. The company is asking for the gross amount back since I left before a year. I feel I should be given consideration for the 3 months that I did work. What advice can anyone give me?
