ABSOLUTELY! I believe there's the criminal matter that needs to be taken care of before any civil lawsuit has any merit. He should be charged and convicted (of what sounds like attempted murder). Once he is convicted, you have the right to go forward with any civil case to collect for medical bills, loss wages and the big one... pain and suffering.
 
Unless you are dead, you surely can sue him for battery. You don't have to wait for conclusion of the criminal proceedings, though often people do wait. On the other hand, once a guy is in jail, often he has no longer any assets that make suing him worth the effort. You should discuss this with an attorney.
