severance pay

My husband is losing his job at the end of this week. His boss is closing down the shop where he works. We are trying to find out if he is entitled to any kind of severance or termination pay. He has not been given any formal notice. The tricky part is that a new man has bought the building and will be opening a new shop in about a month or 6 weeks time. He is planning to rehire my husband. This will be a completely new business with a new name etc. The new boss did buy the building and the contents but not the business name or any of that.

In the USA, which this forum focuses on, severance pay isn't mandatory.
