the only address I have for my husband is a po box...I filed papers today but was told I would have to hire a sherrif to serve...the last place I knew him to be is Alaska and we have been apart since 1984....I don't even know that the po box is valid.....how will I go about this?

You appear to be litigating your own divorce, right?

Okay, this form guide from MA courts is useful.

http://www.mass.gov/courts/courtsandjudges/courts/probateandfamilycourt/cjd101ainstr.html

You'll also require a motion for alternative service, usually that means by publication.
It's not all that exhaustive or intensive, but it'll allow you to keep things moving.

You'll need this form.
You can probably obtain one from the court's website.
