I received an e-mail, yes an e-mail from an ex-girlfriend saying that her 4 year daughter might be mine. This is the first I am hearing of this. Apparently the ex-husband (they were separated but got back together as our relationship ended) is challenging the paternity, He is getting a DNA test in July. She said that she just wanted to give me a heads up that it might turn out that I am the father. I spoke to her and first she said that she didn't want anything from me, but when I told her I would waive all of my parental rights to the child, she got mad. I don't want any paternal rights to the girl. I have a wife and child and its not fair to them. Plus the little girl has been raised in a family with a "step father" all her life. Should I go and take a DNA test asap or wait until the ex-husband gets his results? If I am the father how do I go about waiving my rights? Please help

It is possible that the father may not legally be allowed to deny paternity if he has a well established father-daughter relationship with the child. So, you should just wait it out for now.

Depending on the laws of your state, the step-father (legal father) may not be able to get out of this. It depends on state law and what the courts see as the best interest of the child. If for some reason he is allowed to challenge paternity and the child is not his and the courts are willing to let him out of this, you will have no choice but to take a DNA test. If mom wants support she can ask for it but you will not be able to terminate rights since there is no subsequent adoption. Sucks, but that is how it is. You might want to see an attorney.
