I wish to register my company trademark, which is a custom styled text of the business name. What would be better to register first- the plain text of the name, or the stylized text?

If you wish to register a trademark, it must be unique.

The stylized text would be better.

This is not my strong suit in the law, however.

The Law Professor usually checks in and he'll provide a better explanation.

Trademarks and copyrights are two subjects in which he has vast knowledge.

Thanks Judge. First question - what are you hoping to trademark? Are you seeking to trademark a unique name that you created like "Kimikastanni?" Or is it more generic or plain words? The key is that you need something relatively unique that you can identify with your brand and not cause confusion in the marketplace. For example, simply italicizing the text for "New York Tours" will probably not do it for you alone. Now if you were trademarking a logo with the text, that unique drawing (as it is called) might suffice.
