i owned a business of a beauty salon in pa with a partner. i want to sue the partner for back bills, and other expenses, including forfitted sec. deposit. we had a 1yr lease with the landlord, and on the last day of the lease the partner left and took all of his stuff when i wasnt there, w/ some of the belonging to the salon without giving me notice. we had even planned to look at a new place the next day. he was no longer responsible on the lease because the lease then turned into month to month, the next day, but i had to close the busines do to debt incurred while we were there and he also contacted customers and told them to no longer go there, and he spread really bad rumors about me. my question is can i sue my partner? what what would i sue him for? (meaning deflimation of character.) i am not sure what the legal terms are called. can i file this case with out a lawyer, or are the free public attorneys available for this type of proceedings.

You would have to hire your own lawyer.

You'd sue for defamation, a common law tort.

Speak with a local lawyer and bring your proof.

Outline your understanding of events with a timline.

The initial consult is usually free.

After the meeting you'll have a better idea as to how solid your case might be.

I'd say your chances at prevailing are about 4 to 1 against you.

You'll know better after meeting with a lawyer in person.
