Hello,

My girlfriend recently was backing out of our driveway and slid on ice into a car that was parked across the street from us. My girlfriend left a note with her contact information on it because it was late at night and no one answered the door. The neighbor called and said that they didn't call the police because she has basic liability and i'm assuming doesn't want her insurance to go up. The next day i called our insurance company and they informed us that our insurance had lapsed. I took care of the lapse in insurance but they won't cover us on the accident since it happened during the lapse. I informed the neighbors that they could go get a estimate and we could work something out. They went and got a estimate on the 91 ford escort and it turns out to be $900 which i don't have. I have a friend that restores cars so i offered to buy a door and have it painted to match the car and installed. Today i recieved a call on my answering machine from the neighbor and she said that her lawyer said she in entitled to the door to be done professionaly. I don't have $900 to pay to have the door done by a over priced professional collision shop and i'm not sure what i can do or what is going to happen.

Can anyone help me?

Thank you.

Your neighbor and her attorney are right. They can demand either cash or a professional repair. They probably will sue you if you don't pay.

You might be able to demand another estimate from another professional shop and if it is lower, you probably would only be liable for that amount, but that is all there is. They do not have to put up with an amateur repair.
